AI agents follow the same data controls

Should employees and AI agents follow the same data controls?

Apply the same access and approval discipline to agents, while keeping their identities and workflows distinguishable.

Yes. Apply the same basic discipline to both: limit access, require appropriate approvals and keep a record of activity. An agent should stay within the permissions approved for its task and authorizer. Keep its actions distinguishable from a person’s actions, and adapt the checks to the workflow rather than assuming the controls are identical.

Convenient integrations can leave an agent with more access than its task needs. Kiteworks recommends inheriting the authorizer’s permissions instead of using broad standing credentials, then narrowing them to the assigned task. Those permissions set a ceiling, not a reason to use everything available. Keep the agent, workflow and authorizer visible in access records; borrowed human logins can obscure who actually acted.

Choose checkpoints for deletion, access changes and outbound messages, and check that connected tools cannot bypass them. Kiteworks’s Data Control Plane page describes one policy framework and audit log for supported employee and agent data exchanges, evaluating the data, actor and action. Context and task scope can still produce different decisions. Verify the channels and operations covered in your deployment; these published descriptions do not guarantee compliance.

Put this into practice

  • Limit inherited permissions to the agent’s approved task.
  • Test approval checkpoints across connected tools.
  • Keep agent activity distinct from its authorizer in access records.
